Gradually increase your daily activities after that. Rest with your head elevated, to keep swelling to a minimum.ĪCTIVITY: Rest at home for at least one (1) day. Afrin should be used for no more than three (3) days after surgery. They can be either in a spray (Afrin) or pill form (Sudafed). Also, if you can take decongestants, these will help. The use of saline irrigation eight to ten (8-10) times per day in each nostril can be quite helpful to moisturize the nose and clear debris. If you sneeze or cough, do so with your mouth open.ĪFTER SURGERY CARE: Salt-water/Saline irrigation is highly recommended to decrease swelling and inflammation that may occur post operatively. During your surgery, your physician may have placed intranasal splints, which will contribute to your “stuffiness”. The packing will be removed two to three (2-3) days after surgery. This will add to your general stuffiness. Your physician may insert a special packing in the nose after surgery. Nasal congestion may be alleviated by humidification of the nose with a cool mist vaporizer or humidifier. This may last up to one (1) week after surgery. NASAL CONGESTION: A stuffy nose is normal following sinus/nasal surgery due to swelling of the tissues. If you are soaking through the drip pad more frequently than every fifteen (15) minutes, please notify the office. After surgery, please avoid nose blowing for at least one (1) week. Any profuse bright red bleeding that persists for more than twenty four (24) hours should be reported to your doctor. ![]() NASAL DISCHARGE: This usually occurs for several days, and may be bloody at first, later changing to mucus. Although individual responses vary widely following any operation, you (or your child) can expect to return to normal in about ten (10) days. The following instructions should help during the first and second week after surgery. ![]()
